COMMUNITY POLICIES

Creating a safe space for dance

Transparency, Empathy, Growth

Here at On One Studios, we value transparency, empathy/compassion, and growth. We value these qualities because they allow our students to be informed, feel heard and supported, and to enjoy learning as part of an inclusive, fun-loving community. We strive to create a safe space where everyone can be their best selves. Additionally, we strive to maintain a diverse and inclusive community by employing and educating individuals of all walks of life, capabilities, shapes, sizes, needs, identities, etc. As we and the world around us continue to grow and change, we plan to actively reassess and reinstall policies and procedures to hold us accountable in maintaining a healthy learning environment for all.

OUR POLICIES

On One Studios values the phrase “good person over good dancer.” Every person affiliated with On One Studios will need to demonstrate respect for all others including students, staff, & teachers.

To uphold our “Good person over good dancer” policy in our dance space, we have developed education that features compassionate practices, good listening and communication skills. These steps will allow our staff to mentor all students more emphatically.

On One Studios is committed to providing a work environment free of discrimination based on:

  • Race
  • Religion (including religious dress and grooming practices)
  • Skin color
  • Sex/gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical conditions), sex stereotype, gender identity/gender expression/transgender (including whether or not you are transitioning or have transitioned) and sexual orientation
  • National origin
  • Ancestry

To reduce the risk of harm done in our dance space, we are ensuring healthy boundaries between students and staff by keeping all communication on an appropriate channel, like email or Slack. Furthermore, we have also established resources (see below) for students to get help, such as access to mental health resources and a safety tip line for students that uses a chain of communication and conflict resolution pathways that we have developed.

  • Social status

To ensure everyone who enters our space feels accepted and valued, we have created practices that allow our staff and teachers to be educated, empathetic, and accountable. Staff, leaders, and teachers will be trained in Anti-Othering, Anti-Abuse, and Anti-Racism.

We will cultivate an environment where all On One Studios staff, patrons, and other affiliates have the courage and agency to practice the ability to choose to consent by actively mitigating power dynamics in the studio, steering away from the assumption of consent, and reinforcing each individual’s power of choice.

To ensure our staff use and are well versed in consent based practices, we educate our staff on consent, abuse, signs of grooming, and power dynamics. Additionally, teachers will also be enforced to not correct students with physical touch, acknowledge that groups at the end of class are optional, and give full disclosure if any movement within their piece is of a sexual or hypersexual nature before class begins.

Section 3: Upcoming Projects

Investigation Team Coming in Summer 2023

We are currently in the process of reaching out, screening, and training a group of qualified individuals to create a pool of candidates to help us create a safe space. For each reported case, we will draw from this pool of candidates to create an investigation team. This team is responsible for investigating with all parties and determining whether or not there were actions that went against the studio’s policies and reporting that to studio leadership. We will work to create a pool of candidates who are diverse, come from a variety of backgrounds, and are fully equipped with the resources to conduct unbiased and timely investigations.
